Big changes coming to Crowd-Control in 2.7/2.8

Daglar has mentioned recently that “really big change” is coming to a few forms of crowd control in Patch 2.7 or 2.8.

Thus far Daglar has indicated that:

  • Immunity timers are unlikely to change.
  • They do not wish for players to end up stun-locked by too many CCs without enough immunity.
  • However, they are concerned with existing AoE CCs that cause immunity to trigger too easily on players.
  • One change involves turning all silences and disarms into Debilitates (which is a combination of the two). [r]

Daglar has also indicated that he feels that there is a failing on the design side of crowd control in the game with “to many CC’s in the game period that are to easy to throw around”.

You can check out his posts here and here.

Crowd Control

There hasn’t been an update on crowd control since Patch 1.11.

At present, Crowd Control (“CC”) works as follows:

  • 1st CC effect has full duration. When it ends, the target has immunity for the same period of time as the duration of the CC.

As an example:

If you pop an 8sec CC on a player and:

  • a. They decide to not break out of the CC. It lasts 8secs. They get an 8sec immunity to CC afterwards.
  • b. They decide to break out with Break Free immediately. It only lasted 1sec. They get an 8sec immunity to CC afterwards. (Break Free gives them a 5sec CC immunity buff itself, but the normal immunity lasts for 8secs total).
  • c. They decide to break out with a non-Break Free ability immediately. It only lasted 1sec. They get an 8sec immunity to CC afterwards.

If you pop an 3sec CC on a player and:

  • a. They decide to not break out of the CC. It lasts 3secs. They get a 3sec immunity to CC afterwards.
  • b. They decide to break out with Break Free immediately. It only lasted 1sec. They get a 3sec immunity to CC afterwards, but Break Free also gives a 5sec CC immunity buff. Therefore they have a 5sec CC immunity.
  • c. They decide to break out with a non-Break Free ability immediately. It only lasted 1sec. They get a 3sec immunity to CC afterwards.

Confirmed Changes to Crowd-Control

The below are confirmed changes to Crowd-Control:

  • All Silences and Disarms will become Debilitates, which combine the two. [r]

Possible Changes to Crowd-Control

(note: the below are pure speculation based on what Daglar has mentioned thus far)

Immunity Timers

Given what Daglar has mentioned thus far, changes to immunity timers are unlikely. So an 8sec CC would still provide an 8sec immunity after these changes come in.

AoE CCs

Daglar mentioned there’s an issue with the way AoE CCs end up causing most players to be immune to CC most of the time.

A possible solution would be to make AoE CCs use a different immunity timer ‘category’ from single-target CCs.

For example: An AoE Stun that lasts 5secs would provide the player with a 5sec immunity to AoE Stuns; but won’t provide them an immunity to Single-Target Stuns.

The main down-side to such a change would be if stun-locking ends up becoming possible with this change by players alternating AoE and ST CCs (although you could say that’d be ‘teamwork’ in play).

Change to some CC Abilities

Daglar mentioned there were too many CC abilities that were too easy to throw around. Perhaps possible changes to individual CC abilities in various souls for PvP could be looked at – CC timer reductions, or CCs that only work based on certain procs or conditions (50% hp, 50% mana, only-after-x-ability-is-used/etc).

Will be interesting to see what Trion comes up with for the changes they’ve mentioned to Crowd-Control coming in Patch 2.7 or 2.8.
