Cross-shard farming; is it allowed?

General Feature Image

RIFT Shard-Hopping Feature

So there’s now a do-it-yourself shard-hopping feature where you can right-click your own portrait and switch to any shard in your cluster in an instant. No anchoring required anymore. However, would x, y or z be an exploit now that there is this feature?

For instance;

  • If you farm a small spot for artifacts or gathering nodes then switch to another shard and farm the same place, and then do the same on another shard – are you exploiting?
  • If you kill a rare mob in a specific location and then switch to other shards and kill the exact same mob on multiple shards for their gear drops – are you exploiting?
  • If you kill a bunch of mobs for a quest, and then switch to another shard to kill their mobs because you don’t want to wait for respawn timer on the mobs you just killed – are you exploiting?

No, no and no! Dev Pithos has confirmed that it’s a-okay to do stuff like switching shards for farming purposes. No exploiting!

Correct. Not an exploit. This was available before, it just required you to work with another character, or set of characters, on different shards. Either friends, or your own alt accounts. Now it’s just available to everyone through an easy to use right click menu. Isn’t UI great?

So farm away like you just don’t care! Got a nice artifact farming spot? Switch shards once you’ve farmed it on your shard and start farming all over again. Trying to kill a mob for a daily but someone killed it just prior? – switch shards!

    I LOVE that this isn’t an Exploit. Artifact farming has gotten SO much easier. ^_^

      It’s so amazing! Especially when you get to hard-to-reach locations that are usually filled with ‘rare spawn node’ artifacts (due to how artifact-spawning works) and all you have to do once you finally get to the location (especially on Dendrome walls/buildings/etc) is swap to each and every shard and you just get tons of uncommon, rare and epic artifacts! @,@

    Yep 🙂

    I can’t help but feel that the intent (once several more zones are added and the expansion population settles) is to merge a couple more shards together though. Rift thrives on having zones that have a good population in them.

    At that point, there won’t be much to ‘exploit’ anyway.

      Self-cross-sharding certainly helps populate zones, although I feel the Mayhem in Mathosia events are the biggest boons to low-level shard pops and keeping it exciting for newer players (when they see a ton of players all over the zones).

      I’m noticing – at least on Laethys – that a lot more zone events are failing or near-failing and my guess is that it has to do with the new shard-hopping feature. i.e., before players just completed zone events in their own shards for the most part because they couldn’t be bothered to find an anchor or join a cross-shard events group. Now they can do it on their own so there’s a lot more cross-shard ‘taggers’ who just tag the event then move to the next event on the next shard.
