Auction House Woes and Changes Inc

General Feature Image

With Patch 2.8: Madness Wakes released, there’s been some backlash from a portion of players about the new Auction House system. Specifically, the non-refundable 5% deposit on listing items on the Auction House. This 5% deposit used to be for the vendor price of the item listed, but it is now the listing price. [r]

A few threads on the RIFT forums have popped up providing feedback on the new Auction House that you can check out here and here. Daglar seems to be open to feedback, as long as it isn’t to completely revert the change (to deposit fees).

An explanation of the reasons for the change were given by Daglar:

We determined during the course of the AH revamp that we really wanted to change how this functioned for a number of reasons which include but are not limited too – Removing some amount of platinum from the economy, and insuring that large numbers of sub optimal auctions which hinder performance are not listed. [r]

Based on feedback, Daglar has announced the following changes for next week:

We’ll be increasing the maximum number of hours that an auction can last, and be adjusting the pricing accordingly.

Short – 12 Hours – 0.75%
Medium – 48 Hours – 2%
Long – 168 Hours – 5%

AH Exploit

An Auction House exploit was discovered shortly after the new Auction House was added in that could provide infinite platinum to players. Players who have used this exploit (intentionally or not) will have that plat reverted. [r]

Changes Incoming

  • Price History – Trion was able to import a year’s worth of auction house logs into the data, but one set of logs that didn’t make it were augmented craft items. The data for those items will start fresh. [r]
  • Price Toggle – Trion plans on adding changes to the recommended price toggle so that there’s three options: Recommended; Old Listed Price; Blank. [r]
  • Listing Deposit % + Duration – Changes made as follows: [r]
    • Short – 12 Hours – 0.75%
    • Medium – 48 Hours – 2%
    • Long – 168 Hours – 5%
  • Seller’s Names Back – Seller’s names will be coming back in a hotfix next week. They weren’t removed, but the UI couldn’t fit them in and so you can’t see the names. [r]
  • Buy Order – Buy Order is currently disabled, but it will be coming back in a future update. [r]

It will be what WoW was Pre-AH, trade chat will be a spam fest from players looking to hock their wares w/o having to lose a larger percentage to the in-game money sink…

oh and I’m amazed they are reverting a problem. they didnt do it with the PvP exploit, that still is the big reason I do not PvP in the game much at all.

Thanks for linking the post I started in your article. It means a lot to me that this new AH ‘feature’ gets a change, hopefully in the form of a reversion or the refunding of listing fees should items not sell.

I haven’t enjoyed a game as much as I enjoy Rift since pre-EQ2 days, when I got swept up by a great group running a fan site promoting the development of EQ2. I had a blast for the nearly 2 years running up to its release and for several years after, from testing to top-tier raiding. What made the game different from others is the relationship between the devs and the players, just as it is here with Rift. The game had a great crafting system, more than anyone could ask for in adventuring, questing, exploring (and later, achievements)…and yes, you could collect shinies!

EQ2 also had a fairly decent market system that, just like Rift’s, experienced some tweaking over the years. But never, in all of the examples of greed and lack of foresight SOE has displayed over the last decade and a half, have they ever screwed their player base as bad as Trion did yesterday.

There are better and more sensible and effective ways to sponge plat from players. I honestly can’t think of a worse way than they’ve implemented (other than increasing the percentages of listing fees).

Not even the Ebay execs are this boneheaded.

Anyway, let your voices be heard folks. The more players that speak up, the more likely a meaningful fix can occur. I’m doing all I can to do just this before I vote with my real-world wallet and feet.

I definitely agree with you. I usually spend at least some time every 1-2 days checking out the AH and relisting some of the stuff that didn’t sell previously. After the patch I just looked at the AH for stuff like Infinity Cauldrons and Coruscating Ethereal Shards and just thought “can I risk giving away plat if this doesn’t sell?” and decided “nope.”.

At the very least, I won’t be selling on the Auction House (except for perhaps filling a few Buy Orders once they are re-enabled) until at least next week’s hotfix. No point selling right now when Trion are already going to make those initial changes. I just hope they decide to announce further changes along the lines mentioned in your thread before then.

For the slow calculators like me, the proposed Long duration for AH posts (168 hours) is 7 days.

I’ve been big into using the ah since starting in RIFT in February. No more though, not with these changes.

It annoys and frustrates me severely. I’m usually supportive of their decisions, but this is terrible. I haven’t even been able to find the desire to log into the game today because I don’t even want to look at it.

I’ll be off playing some dark souls 2 in the meantime. I need to think on whether I have any business with RIFT anymore or not.

I don’t even want to look at rift today. I’ll be playing dark souls 2, thinking hard on whether or not I have any further business with Trion.

yeah I’m with you, renewing Patron status was up in the air before… I think its settled. No more Play-to-Wins and DLC rich games. I’m getting sick of being a beta tester for free and paying for content that should have been in a game from the start.
