Another Look: 3.0 Locations – Goboro Reef

Goboro Reef Concept Art Feature Image

There are quite a few locations in the open world in RIFT 3.0. Let us take another look at each location and try to speculate on what we will find. First up, the zone of Goboro Reef – said to be the guiding path to the Plane of Water and is the first zone you will stumble upon.

RIFT 3.0 Goboro Reef Map Guesstimate

RIFT 3.0 Goboro Reef Map Location Guesses

Above is my guess for the locations of some areas of the map. This is based on their names as well as datamined models, skins and concept art. Of course these are guesses and may be wrong.

Goboro Reef Locations

Luminous Passage

Luminous Passage is the first location you will discover right outside the Infinity Gate in the top-left hand corner of the Goboro Reef zone. Thus far we know it is largely underwater with a ton of coral of various shapes and colors, coral trees, clumps of rock and shark mobs.

Skelfmere

“Skelf-“ – Skelfs are a type of fishman mob in RIFT 3.0 that comes in some variations:

“-mere” – ‘Mere’ is a lake that is broader than it is deep  [r]. It also happens to be a Maori war club [r] which is a nice coincidence since the Skelfs use Maori/Polynesian weaponry [r].

Thus, Skelfmere is likely the primary home of the Skelfs – a large, broad (but relatively shallow) lake.

The Hatchery

‘The Hatchery’ is likely where the Skelfs go to lay eggs and breed new Skelfs. According to Trion’s RIFT twitter posts, “it is skelf tradition to let the last in a clutch of eggs perish before making it out of the egg” [r]. Along with the ‘mermaid purse‘ models datamined, ‘The Hatchery’ likely contains Skelf eggs and mermaid purses (shark eggs). The two might be one and the same.

Dream of the Ocean

Not much is known about this place. Given ‘Dream’ is part of its name, it might contain various being created from dreams rather than nightmares (so ‘light’ creatures).

Salt Shallows

This could be a marsh: “Marshes can often be found at the edges of lakes and streams, where they form a transition between the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. They are often dominated by grasses, rushes or reeds” [r].

This ‘Salt Shallows’ could be located in-between the ‘water’ volume areas of Goboro Reef and the ‘dry’ land.

Grove of the Sea

Grove = “small group of trees with minimal or no undergrowth”. [r] The area shown here might be part of the Grove of the Sea, although the trees aren’t packed together like in a typical grove.

Blackwater Forest

Not much to go on for ‘Blackwater Forest’, although it could be an area in Goboro Reef with tar/oil pits and a lot of coral trees. The only other commonality would be with the mercenary/security group ‘Blackwater’. Probably not related to that though.

Dobori Village

Only thing I can come up with is that Dobori is Romanian for ‘to knock down’, ‘to defeat’ [r]. Perhaps this is either a ‘rebel’ village or one that has been enslaved to some other race or civilization.

Is the ‘doopah’ mount datamined previously related to this village?

Mem Ruins

Mem Ruins is probably related to Ghar Station Mem. ‘Mem’ = water in Phoenician [r]. Other than that, the only thing to take from the name is that it is some ruins – so expect destroyed pillars and broken up buildings.

Rust Harbor

This looks to be the coast where the bulk of the shipwrecks outside of Gyel Fortress are located in Goboro Reef; ‘rust’ being the obvious association with rusting iron from the shipwrecks in the zone.

Moonriven Breach

Moonriven Breach was discovered back in Dec 2013 when Trion accidentally included Goboro Reef in their Instant Adventure window. This was quickly removed though and without proper access you could not enter.

‘Breach’ is a break or gap. It is also “the leap of a whale above the surface of the water” [r]. Trion has told us before that:

“The Plane of Water…contains many layers of oceans. Only beings of great power, or those who know the secret currents that connect these seas can travel between layers”. [r]

Thus, ‘Moonriven Breach’ could be a location that connects Goboro Reef and Draumheim zones.

Atragarian Well

A few models have been datamined that are associated with the Atragarian Well and we have enough information to know where it is located and what kind of place it is. It seems to be a location for the ‘Atragarians’ who live in barnacle homes lined across the inner walls of the Well. The Well is ‘submerged’ so that it goes underground and looks like an upside-down shell.

The images above gives you a fairly good idea of what the Atragarian Well looks like. In the last image, the glowing object in the middle is an Atragarian Chandelier (light). All along the walls of the Well are Barnacle Homes.

The Spout

The Spout s likely the area below and to the right of Luminous Passage with the ‘spiral’ image on the map. The models previously datamined shows a very long spiral emanating from the ground.

Grotto of Horror

Grotto = Cave near water subject to flooding [r]. No clue where the “Grotto of Horror” is located, although it might be along the east ‘coast’ (if that even makes sense).

Temple of Ranri

A temple. “Ranri” could just be a name but one possibility is the Japanese romanji らんり ranri which means “dispersed (of citizens in a war-torn country, etc.)”. This could be a Temple for refugees of some war – perhaps the war between the two types of Onir people: the Dream Guard (‘light’) and the Nightmare/Tribulation Soldiers (‘dark’).

The Dobori  (‘defeated’/’knocked down’) Village might be linked to this temple – surviving villagers might have moved to the Temple of Ranri.

Seasong Copse

Copse = A group of trees [r]. As for ‘Seasong’, it might be related to the Siren Songs. In fact, TehFrank datamined a new Siren Song for 3.0 in one of the previous datamines so it isn’t too farfetched to have an area with the Sirens in Goboro Reef.

Calceron Shelf

‘Shelf’ could refer to a ‘Continental shelf’ which is “an underwater landmass which extends from a continent, resulting in an area of relatively shallow water” [r]. ‘Ice shelf’ is a “thick floating platform of ice…flows down to a coastline and onto the ocean surface” [r].

Probably an area to the North of Goboro Reef, closest to the Tarken Glacier. The concept art of Gyel Fortress shown in the bottom of this article shows an ice coastline behind Gyel Fortress. This area might be a top-layer location on the map.

Ghar Station Mem

There’s 3 areas in the WIP version of the Nightmare Tide Plane of Water Map that looks ‘similar’ to each other and could potentially be the Ghar Stations. Each zone has one Ghar Station, with Goboro Reef having ‘Ghar Station Mem’. Just like with the Mem Ruins, ‘Mem’ = water in Phoenician [r].

Ghar Station Guesses

Ghar Station Guesses

Thus, the area in the left might be Ghar Station Mem. Given we have porticulums, it is possible that these areas might have been used to traverse between each layer of the Plane of Water (i.e. each zone). Kind of like how in the Storm Legion continents, there are train rail lines all over the place.

Tinderbox

Tinderbox is a small box that contains tools used to start a fire. Chances are this will be near Gyel Fortress, where the Bloodfire Army are located.

Gyel Fortress

The Gyel Fortress (pronounced guile, not gill) is a massive building in the top-right of Goboro Reef, overtaken by the Bloodfire Army. It is a dungeon in Nightmare Tide, with achievements on the Public Test Shard showing that Lady Glasya (the leader of the Bloodfire Army) is one of the bosses.

Concept Art of Gyel Fortress has been revealed:

RIFT 3.0 Nightmare Tide Gyel Fortress Concept Art

RIFT 3.0 Nightmare Tide Gyel Fortress Concept Art

As shown in the concept art, the place is massive. It is surrounded by tar pits, shipwrecks and ‘dry’ land with water volumes sucked away by the Bloodfire Army. You can also see the smaller tower to the right of the image which is likely Rust Harbor where a large amount of shipwrecks are located.

Blackwater Forest might also be located near the area given all the tar/oil pits.

A couple of interesting locations in Goboro Reef with a few of the areas shown in some way or another via models, concept art or lore. There’s a few locations that are readily identifiable on the WIP Nightmare Tide map. We’ll just have to wait for more information releases from Trion (or perhaps an Open Beta at some point!) to learn more about all 20 locations.

One thing to take note of is that some locations could be on top of each other since some might be underground, others in-water and others still on ‘dry’ land or upper-layer ‘ice’ platforms.

In the mean-time, we have a compilation of 3.0 information here as well as on-going 3.0-related articles with further information.

Don’t forget to check out “Another Look: 3.0 Locations – Draumheim” and “Another Look: 3.0 Locations – Tarken Glacier” for an overview of the other known Nightmare Tide Zones.

is anyone else having problems getting on the pts?

    • August 20, 2014 at 4:49 pm #

I’m able to get on just fine. I’m assuming the PTS was down just temporarily? Or are you getting the Error #1011? CM Morgana posted that you just need to repair RIFT in the Glyph launcher to fix it.
